Merano, spa town

A 7650 m² spa area, 25 basins and pools, 8 saunas and steam baths, a gym, a SPA & Vitality centre incorporate the thermal baths of Merano, a large complex for body treatments and wellness.
Located in the heart of the city, only a few steps from the most important historic and artistic sights of the town, the thermal baths of Merano impress with their modern architecture in the shape of a glass and steel cube.
The building was designed by Matteo Thun amidst a lush green park 50000 m² in size. Centuries-old trees, palm trees and rose gardens surround the thermal baths, and create a truly relaxing atmosphere for nice walks.

During the first half of the 19th century Merano became famous for its climatic conditions. In 1836 Josef Waibi, a doctor, learnt that the air in the city was highly recommendable for people suffering from pulmonary complaints. Furthermore he found out that the grapes growing in this area have a positive effect on digestive problems.
Once the news spread, nobility from all over Europe started to spend their holidays in this South Tyrolean city.
The first famous visitors were Princess Sissi and numerous artists like Richard Strauss, Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke.
Soon Merano welcomed more and more visitors due to its wonderful hospitality.

The discovery of a VATer source containing radon dates back to 1933. This source was believed to be beneficial for complaints of the digestive and respiratory systems, and the ureters. Merano flourished up until the beginning of World War I. The first thermal baths of Merano were establshed in 1972.

Today, Merano is considered the "spa town" of South Tyrol, and is a popular meeting point for those who enjoy wellness and body treatments.
The thermal baths are located in the centre of the city and are within walking distance of our hotel in Merano.
